This post, The Easiest DIY Gnat Trap, was originally published in August 2021 and has been completely updated in June 2025.

A few weeks ago, we noticed all these little, really annoying flying things in our house.

(P.S. We have not had them come back since writing this post….. it really works 🙂 )

Of course, they always bothered us either while we were trying to fall asleep or when we were eating.

Talk about really annoying!!!

So, immediately, I looked up an easy way to get rid of those annoying gnats.

It has been working amazingly that I wanted to share it with you guys too!

Now, we’re pretty sure ours came from some soil we bought for our plants.

But they can also get into your house from rotting food, sweet-smelling products, and even just your kitchen or bathroom which have wet areas.

So let’s get to it!

DIY Gnat Trap

Ingredients

So most of these items you should already have, otherwise, they aren’t expensive to get during your next shopping trip.

  • Warm Water
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Liquid Dish Soap

How To

First, you’ll need to warm up half a cup of water.

Then to the water, you’ll add 2 tablespoons of the apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and about 6 drops of the liquid dish soap.

Mix them all together so the sugar is dissolved.

We place the mixture in shallow bowls and/or 1/4 cup measuring cups, and then place the bowls in the pot that has the gnats.

Otherwise, place it near the area that seems to have the most gnats.

Give it time, but within about 12 hours or so you’ll see plenty of gnats in your mixture.

We replace ours about once a day but I’m sure you could keep it longer as long as you see more and more gnats being caught.

There you have it!
