Admit

Definition:
Confess to be true or to be the case, typically with reluctance.

Is it easy for you to admit when your wrong?

Do you have a tendency to blame others rather than take responsibility for your actions.

It’s certainly human nature to protect ourselves and not admit failure.

But is it healthy?

Well, in the flight or fight response it obviously seems healthy to not admit when your wrong so you can avoid punishment or arguments. Yet, in reality, it’s the opposite, right?

Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.
∼Bruce Lee

Now, let’s stop for a minute and let me tell you something.

I really dislike confrontation and arguments. So you know what I do sometimes?

I’ll admit my wrong doing first, to alleviate the waiting period between the doing and the confrontation.

When Should You Admit You’re Wrong

Yup, I think it’s best to do it right away.

Unless there is a reason you have to/need to wait, I think the sooner the better.

Yes, there will still likely be a confrontation, but, if it happens before you’ve had time to really think about it, it probably won’t be as bad as you fear!

And, if you’ve had to wait, I still think the sooner you can speak up the better.

Why You Should Admit When You’re Wrong

So you might be thinking, especially if it can’t be done right at the time, why even do it?

Maybe everyone will  just forget about it and move on?

You know you are wrong but if no one else brings it up why be the one to mention it?

Well, because it’s the right thing to do!

Why wait to admit when you’re wrong? Get it over with and move on!

Tweet this!

Not only that but it shows maturity and leadership.

And I’m not even talking about in the work place.

Within your family, being able to admit when you are wrong can go a long way.

I know when my parents or brother admit when they are wrong it can change the dynamics in the best way.

Talk about respect!!!

And who doesn’t want to be respected?

The mark of a wise person isn’t never making mistakes – everyone makes plenty of them.
Rather, it’s the ability to quickly admit – and fix – them.
∼Whitney Tilson

And if we are talking about within a work environment, well then, I think it’s a no-brainer.

To show your maturity and respect for you co-workers or boss can only bring about good!

How To Admit Your Mistakes

So how do you do it?

Well, my best advice is to  – Just Do It!!!!

If it’s a small thing you need to apologize for, then however or whenever would work.

A lot of times I will do it when the person I need to apologize to is calm and/or settled, especially if I can’t do it at the moment.

Otherwise, simply spit it out! 🙂

The sooner you get it out the sooner it will make its impact.

And, I believe, verbally is your best policy.

Admitting your mistake by physical action can certainly be a great second step if you think it is needed. But nothing compares to actually hearing the words ‘I’m Sorry or I made a mistake’.

  1. As I always like to say, “I may not always be right, but I’m never wrong.”

On a serious note, when admitting being wrong to someone, having the additional courage to look the person in the eye makes it just that much more meaningful.

    • Oh, I agree with you completely!! It will certainly make a difference in how it’s recieved. Thanks so much for sharing!

  2. This was a great read. Such a good reminder!

This is such a great post. I can say that I can easily admit if I am wrong or do some mistakes and immediately correct it.

  4. I am trying to do this more often. I feel better when I am open and honest. When I was younger, I always had to be right no matter what!

  5. I make it a point to always admit when I was wrong. I usually mention that I am unsure before making my statements if I have a question as to whether my memory serves me right or not. I think it is important in relationships to allow others to make mistakes. I am always honest for this reason. So many great points are mentioned here. Thanks for the reminder that admitting fault is better than holding onto pride.

  6. This is very encouraging. Sometimes this is all people need to turn things around.

  7. Good points. As adults we tend to make excuses at times but it’s better if we just admit when we are wrong.

  8. It takes courage to admit when you’re wrong. But there is serious opportunity for growth in those moments and we owe it to ourselves to be open to them. Thank you so much for such a lovely and powerful reminder 🙂

    • I agree! It’s not always easy to do it but YES, what an opportunity for growth. Thanks lady for sharing 🙂

  9. I am a firm believer in admitting when you are wrong, like you said, it’s just the right thing to do. I agree, the sooner the better is best for everyone involved. That way none is stewing over what happened and everyone can move on. Great advice!

    • 🙂 Thanks – Yea, I’m one of those people who can always make something worse just by thinking about it, so the sooner the better is always better for me!!!! Thanks lady!! 🙂

  10. This is a really good mantra to live by. Admitting you’re wrong is hard sometimes but necessary. I’ve been friends with people who literally are never wrong and it’s exhausting! And, it gets old after a while. There’s a healthy balance to life and being able to say you’re sorry is a big part of it!
