Perception: Why It’s Important To Know

Perception: Why It’s Important To Know

The funny thing about perception is that it’s very personal, right?!

A rainbow over a hill with text overlay – Perception. Why it’s important to know.
A hand reaching out to mountains with text overlay – Perception. Why it matters.
A wooden walking trail with text overlay – Perception.

My perception of something may be completely different than yours even though we’re experiencing the exact same thing!

I recently saw a great meme on this that showed 2 dogs standing in some mud. It said, how deep the mud is depends on your perception, or something like that. One dog was tall so the mud wasn’t very much. The other dog was very short which of course means the mud came up to his stomach!

Another one I saw mentioned plates. That everyone’s plates are different. Maybe someone has a smaller plate than yours. Theirs might be paper and flimsy.

How about the one with one person facing the number 6 and the other person on the other side and can see it as a 9? Both perspectives are correct, right?

Your Perception

There will, of course, be times when we feel like our perspective is right but if you sit back you might just realize that yours can be right but someone else’s is right too.

And isn’t that ok?

Of course!!!!

So the next time you’re having a conversation or better yet an argument remember there can be lots of different perspectives.

It’s hard, right, especially when we ‘know’ we’re ‘right’.

But here’s the thing.

Do you know where perceptions come from?

They come from our backgrounds.

How we were raised.

What kind of city or town you lived in.

Were you surrounded by good friends and family?

Did you get to travel while you were growing up?

And these are just five points out of probably hundreds of factors that help contribute to you perception.

Perceptions in your daily life

Have you ever considered how these perceptions effect your daily life?

Do you ever find yourself having arguments with people when really you could just be having a conversation?

Think for a second, do you think you’ve ever defended an idea or thought of yours when really it might have been more of a perception?

One of my favorite quotes in life:

Nothing is either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

Shakespeare

Now, of course this is not be all end all but it certainly does give you a insight on how perception works.

Some people like winters and cold weather.

Others love summer and hot weather.

Neither is right or wrong but can be formed by our perceptions.
